MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

This book has been on my radar for a looonnngggg time. My mom read this series and told me that it was great and that I should read it. I've had the first, third, and fourth books on my bookshelf for awhile but was never motivated to pick them up. My friend Sarah from Words With Sarah told me she just ordered the first two from the series, so we decided to buddy read the first one together. And boy am I glad that I finally picked this book up!

MacKayla Lane has a pretty good life. She's been living at home while bartending and hasn't ever experienced anything out of the ordinary. Until, one day, her sister is brutally murderd while studying abroad in Ireland. Devastated after hearing a missed voicemail days before her sister died, Mac decides to go to Dublin to find her sister's killer. What Mac doesn't expect to find, though, is a whole world she's never known that she was a part of and an unnerving bookstore owner who is determined to use Mac to find a very dark and powerful book. Can Mac survive in this new world full of Fae and find her sister's killer before they kill her first?

Wow, this book! Karen Marie Moning has created a world unlike any other, but it definitely takes awhile to get into. At times, I felt like this could have totally been a tv show and this entire book would have been the pilot episode. We were introduced to Mac's normal life and then follow her to the insane Fae world that killed her sister in Dublin. There was so much mystery and danger when Mac arrived in Dublin that you had no idea what she was going to face next. The different kinds of evil Fae were crazy and freaky and awesome! And Mac is one kick-butt character to face those Fae. She's definitely not your typical heroine with her pink, trendy clothes, but I loved her!

What really sealed the deal with me, though, was definitely Jericho Barrons. From the moment he met Mac, he had absolutely no patience for her attitude. Sarah and I agreed that there was definitely a slow burn attraction between Mac and Barrons and you are just dying for them to get together for the entire book. But, I had to remind myself that this was the first book in a series and the characters couldn't jump right in with each other in book one. Ugh!! I loved how much Mac and Barrons bickered, but also really helped each other and slowly found themselves attracted to each other. I was just like, GET TOGETHER ALREADY!!! Haha, nothing makes a book more intriguing than characters who have such intense chemistry but also a real relationship that isn't centered around feelings or attraction. Barrons needed Mac to find this powerful book and Mac needed Barrons to survive the insane Fae world she found herself in. They got annoyed with each other and fought with each other, but you could totally tell they wanted each other.

Overall, this was an intriguing start to what I can only assume is an amazing series. If the rest of the books are anything like this one, I know they're going to be awesome. I loved the world, the characters, and the storyline that Karen Marie Moning created in Darkfever. I can't wait to pick up Bloodfever to see what happens next to Mac and Barrons!

  1. I liked this series a lot (the first few books more than the later) and it's really because the characters don't get together easily.
